6月の苗植えからプチトマトを見守っています。8月に援農に行くと、新しいツルは、太陽に向かってどんどん伸びていました。畑には何種類かの品種の異なるプチトマトを場所を分けて植えあります。違う品種のプチトマトが別の品種のところに成長していかないよう、できるだけ苗を植えた場所に近いネットにツルがうまく這ってほしいのです。そこで今回は、ツルにヒモをつけて正しい方向へ成長してもらうための作業を行いました。からんだツルをほぐしながらの作業です。太陽に向かって伸びているものをほぐしたりヒモをつけたりするので、ずっと頭は空に向いています。普段しない姿勢なので、結構首がたいへんです。また、ツルを伸び放題に放置しておくと強風に耐えられなくて折れることもあるため、この作業は地味ですが重要な作業になります。そしてどこにヒモを付けるかについて、重要なポイントがありました。それは、成長の段階で、不要なツルはハサミで切るため、残すツルに対してヒモ付けていくことです。この日は天候が悪かったので、ツルを切る作業を同時にやってしまうと、切った部分から病気になることもあるため、ヒモだけを行い、切る作業は晴れた日に行うことになったので、不要なツル、メインのツルがどれなのかを理解した上で、ヒモを付けていきました。簡単そうで意外と難しい部分もあって、最後、スタッフさんに確認＆修正していただきました。
I have been watching mini tomatoes growing up since June. As an August farming volunteer, I saw new vines were growing upwards to the sky. There were a few kinds of mini tomatoes in the field of which the vines tend to intertwine. Different tomato vines should not intertwine. So, my task of the day was to untangle them and put strings so that they would creep toward the proper direction of the farm-net facility. It was uncomfortable and hard to keep my heads up to untangle vines. Then I had to put strings. It was also hard to distinguish which vines to grow, and which vines to cut. The strings were attached to the ones that were to grow. I did not cut off unwanted vines on this day due to the rainy weather. They tend to get diseases if I had cut them in such weather. So, unwanted vines were to be cut off later on a sunny day. This old work was important. If they were left as they were, the strong winds might be snapped them off. At the end of the work, a farm staff checked and corrected the strings if I had done it right.
