今回はミニトマトの苗を植えました。今回の援農ボランティアでの学びは、トマトが同じ方向に実がなるということでした。1本の苗から横に枝分かれするたくさんの葉のうち、花が咲いている場所をよく見ると、苗の上から下まで全部同じ向きになっていて、その花がしおれると、その部分にトマトの実が成長してきます。おもしろいです。そのようなことから、苗を植える時は、花が咲いている側を手前にして、収穫しやすくします。もう1つおもしろいことに、トマトはツルがいろいろなところにのびてきます。苗をひとまとめにしておくと、苗同士がからみあいます。これを1つずつ丁寧に扱って、ほぐすのもたいへんな作業です。
My task on this day as a farming volunteer was to plant mini tomato seedlings on the field. I learned a curious thing on this day that tomatoes bear fruits only in one direction. Out of many leaves from one main stem, all flowers were facing on one side straight from top to bottom. After the flowers wilted, they bear fruits on the same spots just as flowers were. It’s interesting. Therefore, when planting seedlings, it is recommended to plant them facing to lane so that it is easy to pick fruits when they grew enough. One more curious thing was that tomato vines grow everywhere. When the seedlings were left together, vines tend to twine around each other. I handled them with care and split them to plant.
