ボランティアで一番つらいこと、困惑することは、無駄に時間泥棒されることです。これまではなかったのですが、ここ最近、びっくりするイベント関係者があまりに多いので、そのうちの1つを話します。あるスポーツイベントの手伝いで、当日は、早朝からたくさんのボランティアが集められていました。ブリーフィングの後、事前に決められた担当部署にボランティアが配置されていきました。私1名は通訳のポジションでしたが、係りの人からは待機と言われ、独り放置された状態となり、その後、忘れられたも同然、結局のところ、係りの人が再び私の前に、やってくることはありませんでした。午後になっても何も連絡がなく放置だったので、あきらめて、事務所連絡先に伝言を残し、帰らせていただくことにし、その後の入る予定だった日の分もすべてキャンセルを申し出ました。これまでたくさんのボランティァをやってきた中で、最初から仕事がない、放置される、という雑な扱いを受けたのは初めてでした。ボランティアは、ただの暇人ではありません。暇だからボランティアをしているのではありません。募集したならば、それなりの責任をもって適切な方法でボランティアを扱ってほしいものです。
The most annoying and bewildering part as a volunteer is to be taken and wasted my precious time for nothing. There was nothing like this before, but recently I happened to meet such terrible situations quite often. So, I am going to tell you one of the stories. It was a sports event. Many volunteers were gathered from early morning and expecting to do the roles informed in advance. After the briefing, leaders split us into groups and took them to the spots they would be working during the day. I was the only volunteer who came to work as an interpreter. One of the leaders said to me to stay. I was left alone and forgotten. No one came to me for instructions after that. It was the first time I had no job from the morning and received rough treatment. In the afternoon of the day even, there were no updates. I decided to quit waiting there for nothing. I left a message to the event office that I quit and canceled the rest of my volunteer schedule. Volunteers are sacrificing and contributing the time not because we have plenty of time and nothing to do, but willing to support, enjoy and learn ourselves. If one organization requested and collected volunteers, they should be responsible for properly handling and treating us.
