私が以前住んでいた地域では海外の姉妹都市との様々の行事が行われていました。そのうちの1つとして、日本人の学生たちが相手国に行き、ホームステイをさせてもらったり、また相手国の学生が来日してホームステイすることもありました。私がこのときに協力したのは、ホームステイ受け入れ開会式でのサポートです。もう1名のボランティアの方は、一番重要な挨拶の部分を通訳しました。もちろん事前に資料を渡されていたようですが、とてもたいへんだったと思います。私の役割は、開会プログラムと、その前後で、来日した学生と引率の先生方に、待機やトイレ休憩、移動の指示をしていました。何人かの学生たちは、以前に顔合わせをした者同士で、この再会に興奮している様子がありました。受け入れファミリーと学生の顔合わせをして、最後にフリータイムがありました。私は来日者と受け入れファミリーとの間のコミュニケーションのお手伝いをしました。私自身もホームステイを体験したことがありますが、本当にワクワクドキドキ、楽しい思い出でした。
The city I lived in had sister city events throughout the year. One of them was a stay program. Japanese students went to the sister city. The sister city students came to Japan. I helped with the opening ceremony of the welcome program. I instructed the students and the teachers from the sister city to wait, rest for the bathroom, or move throughout the day. There was one more volunteer who took an important role in interpreting the whole ceremony. She was given program detail in advance so that she could be well prepared. I supposed it was a lot of work. Some of the students looked so excited. They knew each other before through a pat sister city event. During the ceremony, the chairperson introduced students to Japanese host families. In the end, there was free talking time to greet each other. I helped with the communication in both Japanese and English. I also had experiences staying homes of international hosts. I remembered the exciting memories in the past.
