今回の援農では「香附子(こうぶし)」または「浜菅(はますげ)」と呼ばれる雑草について学びました。一般常識として、雑草を取ってあげないと、雑草に栄養をもっていかれてしまうので、できるだけ根っこから取ってあげることは知っていました。今回は落花生の雑草取りをやっていたのですが、この「香附子(こうぶし)」に関しては、地上に生えている雑草を取るだけではダメで、芋掘りでもするかのように結構地面を掘りました。そうすると茎と根っこをつなぐ部分に豆粒のようなものが出てきます。これを取ってあげないと延々と生え続けるのです。大量の雑草取りで本当に大変だったのですが、芋掘り感覚で実践すると、掘れたことにちょっぴり喜びを感じながら実践できました。
I was removing weeds in a peanut field for today’s farming volunteer. I have learned about weeds called “Kohbushi” or “Hamasuge.” As common sense, I know that weeds are unwanted and should be pulled together with their roots. Otherwise, they take nutrients and prevent products grow. However, with this “Kohbushi,” removing weeds seen on the field is not enough. I had to dig under the ground just as I dig potatoes. I found small peas which were attached to the roots. These peas had to be removed from the ground. Otherwise, the weeds grow again so easily and quickly. It was hard work as weeds were all over the field. I said to myself and pretended that I was digging potatoes. This way, I found a small joy.
