またまたひどい案件のお話し。ある国際スポーツイベントの大会手伝いです。希望通りの担当と日程で割当されました。事前の研修会や資料配布など、事前の段取りがしっかりしている団体だと感じました。期待いっぱいで当日集合場所に集まると、びっくりするほど大勢のボランティアがいました。全員がわくわくしていたと思います。ブリーフィングの後、担当部署ごとに所定の場所への配置となりました。私は撮影班だったので、プレスルームに移動しました。そこからがビックリの始まりです。撮影班には、カメラの提供もなく、広報用のビブもありませんでした。待機のみでした。あれだけ事前の段取りをしていたのは何だったのでしょう。だいぶ経過した頃、ボランティアを取りまとめる係の人がやってきたので、このひどい状況について、心の内をすべて伝えました。さらに待たされ午後になり、ようやく広報用のビブだけが届きました。でもカメラは提供されないままです。仕方なく、プレスルームを出て、他の班の人の様子を見に行くと、仕事がないと言ってる人がいたるところにいました。怒って帰ったボランティアもいると聞きました。私自身、初日だけは何とか忍耐しましたが、これ以上、無駄に有給休暇を消化したくありませんでしたので、残りの日数はすべて辞退を申し出ました。ボランティアは、何人集めても人件費がタダです。かといって、無計画に大量に集めるのは、ボランティアの貴重な時間を盗む迷惑行為なだけです。きちんと計画を立てて必要な人数を決めていただきたいものです。
Again, this is another terrible story helping in an international sports event. I was assigned as previously requested. I thought the organization was well-organized. They had well-organized training sessions for volunteers as well as the training materials. On the day of the event, I gathered in the event location with big expectations. I was surprised to see many volunteers there. I was sure everyone was so excited to work as volunteers. After the briefing, the leaders split us into groups, and everyone moved to the allocated places. A leader took me to the press room as my role was shooting pictures. He said to me to stay there. Surprises began. There was neither a camera nor a press vest provided. What were all the preparations before the event? Some hours later, one of the leaders came to the press room. I told him how I felt terrible the situation was. I waited some more hours. In the afternoon, a press vest finally came, but a camera. So I felt give me a break. I decided to leave the press room and walked around to see the situation of other volunteers. Many of them said they had nothing to do. I even heard some people got upset, quit, and left home. I tried to be patient on the first day, but I had canceled the rest of the schedule. I didn’t want to waste my precious annual paid leaves for nothing. Collecting volunteers and let them do work is costless of labor charges. However, gathering and allocating without proper plan and management give trouble to volunteers. It results in a waste of our precious time.
