子どもの時に書道の習い事をしていました。この経験が役に立つとは思ってもいませんでした。私が以前住んでいたエリアでは、公立の学校に多くの英語のネイティブの方がアシスタントティーチャーとして派遣されていました。来日したばかりの先生が、まずは日本のことを学ぶための研修の一環として、茶道や書道のような文化体験ができるようにプログラムが段取りされていました。そこへ私のようなボランティアがサポートをするということになりました。1つの教室で20名くらいの英語のネイティブの先生が一生懸命書道にチャレンジしてくれました。講師は現役の書道の先生が1名、私はその先生のそばに立って通訳しました。講師の口から出る書道の専門用語を耳にして、英訳がさっぱり思い浮かばず、ただただジェスチャーするしかできず、力不足な私だったなと思います。でもこうした機会を与えられて本当に嬉しかったです。
Learning Shodo or Japanese calligraphy is one of the popular after-school activities among children. My parents had sent me to such a class when I was a child. Different from western calligraphy which is more for art hobby purpose, Shodo is useful for a daily purpose here in Japan. Anyway, I was glad that I was able to support new English assistant teachers to Japan. As a part of the newcomers’ training programs, Shodo class was given. There was one Japanese Shodo instructor for about twenty English native speakers. I was helping communication between them. I was not good enough to convert Shodo technical terms into English but used gestures instead. Anyhow, I enjoyed this opportunity so much.
