長くボランティアを経験していると、その時限りのカジュアルな出会いから、心に残る貴重な出会いもたくさんあります。私はゴルフトーナメントのボランティアをしているときに、貴重な出会いがありました。その試合では、アメリカ人のシニアプロゴルファーが試合に出るため、アメリカ人ボランティアもグループでアメリカからやってきていました。ボランティア控え室のテントの中では、アメリカ人ボランティアはアメリカ人だけでかたまっていました。日本人ボランティアは日本人だけでかたまっていました。友達になりたいなと思いつつも、そういう雰囲気でもなく、アメリカ人のグループに入り込む余地はありませんでした。アメリカ人のボランティアの方たちも、せっかく日本に来ているのに、日本人に交わろうともしていませんでした。私が控え室の外を歩いていると、同じように歩いているアメリカ人の女性を見かけました。自然に挨拶をしました。彼女はアメリカから来たボランティアの一人でした。私たちはゴルフを一緒に見たり、自然とおたがいの身の上話や、家族のこと、悩んでいることなどを話しました。共通な点もたくさんありました。とても短い時間でしたが、じっくり深い話をしたこともあって、とても長い時間に感じました。初めて会った方とこんなに自然に親しくなれたのは初めてでした。ボランティアでは、こういった貴重な出会いがあります。大事にしたいものです。
As I volunteer for so many years, I meet many casual encounters and many precious, unforgettable encounters. There was the most precious, memorable encounter when I was volunteering in a golf tournament. In this tournament, many American seniors were playing. Many American volunteers came to Japan as a group. There was a waiting room of a big tent for volunteers. In this tent, American volunteers were sitting together by themselves as a group. Japanese volunteers were sitting together just by themselves. I felt I wanted to meet them and become friends, but it was not that atmosphere. I couldn’t go into the American group. It looked American volunteers were not interested in talking to Japanese volunteers. When I was walking outside the tent, I saw an American lady. We greeted each other naturally. I found she was one of the volunteers from the US. We watched golf players playing. We started talking about ourselves naturally. We talked about private matters, families, worries, etc. We found many of ourselves in common. It was a short time, but I felt long and talked in deep. I never had this opportunity to meet a person like her and became so close naturally. Working as volunteers, anybody will also have this opportunity. Treasure every encounter.
